Hanover Healthfoods is a long-established health food shop in Edinburgh city centre. From our store at 40 Hanover Street, we supply a carefully chosen range of vitamins, supplements, herbal products, organic foods and natural skincare to customers across Edinburgh and Scotland — all matched with friendly, expert advice.
Welcome! Hanover Healthfoods is a locally owned independent health food store with a proud heritage. We were established at 40 Hanover Street, Edinburgh, in 1904, which makes us one of the oldest continuously trading health food stores in the world — and, from everything we have been able to establish, may even be the oldest. Our stock includes professional-quality supplements from brands like Viridian Nutrition, Lamberts, A.Vogel, Pure Encapsulations and many more. We have a particularly strong range of magnesium, Vitamin D3 and probiotics, along with specialist products that are not stocked in many other stores.
In addition to stocking a wide range of high-quality health and wellness products, what really makes us special is the quality of our advice and customer service. John, the owner, has worked here since 1994, which gives us a deep understanding of what we recommend and why. We think that makes us particularly good at discerning fad from fact — something reflected in our many 5-star Google reviews and in our having won Best Specialist Store at the Scottish Independent Retail Awards multiple times.

How do you find us?
We are at 40 Hanover Street, right in the centre of Edinburgh, just off Princes Street. Our shopfront is pale green and we are in a semi-basement, so look down! Our What3words location is: **code.until.long**.
Do I need an appointment?
Heavens no. But if you have a lot of questions, it might be worth checking when it is quieter. If you are not able to get in, you can always email us or phone us.
Do you have online articles?
We are slowly adding high-quality articles to our website based on our knowledge and experience. We think they are a good way of seeing the depth of our understanding first hand. Recent topics include Magnesium, Allergies, and Celtic Sea Salt vs Himalayan Salt. Our articles are researched and handwritten by us, not AI!
Do you have a loyalty scheme?
We created a LoyalTree Card™ for in-store customers, which rewards you with discounts the more you shop. The card also gives you the option of planting a tree in the Scottish Highlands with Trees for Life. Our customers have planted nearly 3,000 trees through the scheme since 2019.
Do you deliver?
Yes — you can order through our website or by phoning us. Whilst we do not offer next-day delivery, we aim to get orders out the same day if they are placed before 2pm. Minimum orders apply for free postage. Chilled items cannot be despatched. We do not accept international orders through our website, but you can contact the store directly if you are outside the UK.
How do I know whether you have what I want?
Our website has a good search function and, unusually for a small, independent business, has live stock levels next to each product so you can see whether it is here or not. From there you can choose to have it shipped or Collect In Store.
